Title: Reading Blog 2: EBC Chapter 1 & 5

Summary: Chapter 1 explains the importance of communication in the workplace or when applying for a job. It mentions how the growth of automation is causing a rise in the demand of communication-oriented jobs and a drop in the demand of jobs where one can be tucked away in a corner. It provides strategies for better communication and listening skills. Chapter 5 explains how email is taking over the workplace. There are not many better or universally-used methods of conveying professional messages than through email. It also give tips on how to construct a professional email.

Comment: Chapter 1 and chapter 5 both talk about how important communication is in the workplace. Chapter 1 talks more about in-person verbal and nonverbal communication, and chapter 5 talks more about digital communication, but both have the commonality of requiring professionalism. Body language, tone, and dictation need to be professional while talking directly to a person, just as it is important for an email to be formatted in a way that does not come off as unprofessional.

Question: Why is it less acceptable to be casual in a workplace or interview? Also, how much does a potential employer’s scanning of one’s social media affect their chance of getting hired? Is a potential employer looking for some sort of professionalism, or is their goal just to make sure they are not a criminal or someone who frequently speaks or acts offensively?
